New Digs!

He's out of the ICU and into the Intermediate Care Unit (IMCU). It's on the 5th floor of the University hospital, and the chairs here are very comfy. The room is warmer, and he has a flat-screen TV and a DVD player for our lounging enjoyment.

The occupational therapist, Jenny, just came in to ask about what he does and the layout of the house. It sounds like she's the one who will be helping him get ready to go home. We certainly don't know a time line for that yet, but it's a delightful thought.

Travis, Bill and Molly McMahon, Tracy Green, and Claudia Dines (thanks for the food coupons!) have all stopped by this afternoon, along with some of the regular family.

Now for a running commentary on the physical therapist meeting:

He's sleeping at the moment, but the therapists are here to interrupt him. He's a bit dizzy, but that could be from the pain meds.

He can touch his shoulders, no numbness in fingers or toes. Arm strength is good. He can get his socks off on his own... mostly... his balance is still a bit off, and all the tubes and cuffs are making it tricky.

Alarms going off... yeah, tubes get kinked when he moves around. Standing up now! Leaning forward a bit much, so he's leaning back a bit more to balance. Something hurts on his left foot. A few wobbly steps, using the therapists' arms as a walker. Sitting back down. Laying back in bed, and straightening tubes out.

So there are some things to work on. Balance, in particular, but pain meds are likely to be a factor with that.

Looks like there's some work to be done, but he's doing amazingly well. G - O - - D - A - D, Goooooo.... Daaaaad!

And thanks, Dr. Hunziker, and the consult team for checking on us.

HI from the frozen North. I am thrilled about the progress Randy is making. Karalee put his name on the prayer roll of the Dallas Temple and I did the same on the Edmonton Temple. Rebecca fasted on Saturday because she said it couldn't wait until Sunday. The rest of us did on Sunday. I am so happy with today's report!!! Keep it up. Love, Merrilee

I was very blessed today. As I was visiting with Barbara and others the nurse came in and said Randy was in his new room, man I have never seen Barbara move so fast. Well I just kind of followed and was able to see Bishop Randy. Barbara ask if he knew who I was, and he said Jim. I made a few comments and then he flashed that wonderful smile of his. After all he has been through he looked wonderful. He was quite alert and his cheeks were pink.(the ones on his face)Hang in there Bishop, and keep those nurses on their toes.

I tagged along and was able to see Bishop Randy for a very short time. After all he has been through he looked wonderful. He new me and flashed that neat little smile of his, and his cheeks were good and pink,(the ones on his face). What an uplifting day for me.

Yeah, Randy!!! Welcome to my club! If anyone asks you for stories or if you've seen the light at the end of the tunnel, just make it up! I did! And be sure you don't put anything too dangerous in your hands for a while. I threw my difib across the room because of my out-of-control arms! Randy, you and I have a bond that hopefully no one else will have. We love you and Barbara and can't wait to come and see you!
Kelly
P.S. Sorry, you didn't get to wear the washcloth bikini!

Bravo. I check this blog 4-5 times a day and am continually thrilled with the progress. Emmy and I put his name on the San Diego prayer roll Thursday night. We were driving near by, and drove by because we didn't know the phone number. I ran in, and was obviously not dressed appropriately, I really threw the guy at reception off. He WOULD NOT take a name from me, but would give me a phone number on the little printed card. So, I walked outside of the temple, pulled out my cell phone and 5 steps away, called, and the lady that answered was MUCH nicer. Carrie fasted on Saturday for Randy - the whole time she was babysitting Megan, Ian and Erin. She was so grateful she could do something to help!! We love you guys all so much, keep up the good work and tell Randy hello for us tonight.

PS I was talking to my Dad tonight, a retired surgeon, and he could follow everything I was telling him. He just kept saying "that must have been a very talented vascular surgeon, that's amazing that he could repair that". I said "so, it doesn't matter if his bedside manner wasn't so hot?" Dad said "doesn't matter at all, just matters what his surgery manner is, and apparently it was fantastic!"
